Making the Course

Driven by my interest in psychology and communication, I went on a personal exploration that led me to uncover exciting insights on assertiveness. This journey sparked the idea of creating an e-learning course to share my findings with a broader audience.

This course is tailored for a diverse audience keen on mastering effective communication strategies. The primary focus is on empowering participants to uphold relationships and achieve their communication goals without compromising personal interests.

Audience: wide audience
Tools Used: Tilda, Canva, Google Docs, ChatGPT, Figma
Format: Self-paced, self-check, auto-check
Instructional Design Concepts
Cognitive science confirms that if you want people to remember something—turn it into a story (Brown et al., 2014).
A good story is interesting to follow; it evokes an emotional response and does not cause cognitive fatigue. So, my idea was to make a course that revolves around a narrative—a journey within a workplace. So, I incorporated storytelling, whose element isn't just episodic; it forms the foundational structure of the entire course, aiming to engage learners in a continuous and relatable narrative.

As the topic revolves around soft skills and self-awareness development, I've incorporated reflective questions and questionnaires to encourage deeper self-analysis. Moreover, I fostered engagement by guiding learners to draw from their personal experiences and backgrounds, aiming to enhance the relevance of learning and promote active participation rather than passive consumption of content.

I intentionally withheld certain aspects of the theory, aiming to stimulate curiosity and encourage learners to conduct further research and independently explore the topic.
Technical Part
Beyond content, this course became a personal challenge. Instead of relying on common authoring tools, I opted to use only the standard website blocks provided by Tilda. The goal was to demonstrate that a comprehensive learning experience can be crafted within the constraints of widely accessible online platforms. This technical aspect adds an interesting layer to the project, exploring the possibilities of impactful e-learning without the need for more sophisticated tools.
Design and Development
As the foundation of the course, I used a presentation I had previously created, with the intention of eventually transforming it into a more traditional slide-based course.

When the idea to integrate theory into a narrative arose, I first established the learning objectives, which shaped the structure of the course. It was decided that the narrative would unfold over four days, aligning with the corresponding objectives.

I then outlined the scenario for each of the four days and briefly described the characters in a separate document. Using Figma, I sketched the page layout, which served as a reference for all subsequent designs. After researching available blocks in Tilda, I selected those most suitable in terms of design and functionality. ChatGPT aided me in refining the story text and scripting dialogues. For graphics and video visualization, I primarily utilized Canva, where I modified characters and created settings that complemented the narrative.

Retrospective
Because the course originated from my own curiosity to consolidate knowledge on the topic, I didn't involve subject matter experts. Instead, I relied on materials from open sources and thematic books. As a result, I missed the chance to verify the theory and discuss how it fits into the presented story. This leaves room for the potential distortion of the theory.

While crafting the story, I had to refine my storytelling style meticulously. This involved adhering to the rules of conveying the author's voice and considering the nuances of each character's communication style.

Using a website creation tool to design educational material meant I had to think about UI design principles. Although I mostly trusted my intuition and visual taste to plan navigation and design, this experience showed me where I needed to improve. It's helped me identify areas for further professional development.

Ultimately, the course evolved to encompass deeper psychological insights than initially planned. As I delved deeper into the theory of the topic, I realized the course needed a shift. Rather than solely emphasizing effective communication techniques, which are challenging to practice in this format, I aimed to explore the psychological aspects. This decision resulted in a course that implies more profound self-analysis, equipping learners with useful tools and techniques. This, I believe, lays the groundwork for enhanced communication skills development.
